Haakon VIII takes constitutional oath as Norway’s new king

Norway’s newly proclaimed King Haakon VIII has formally taken the constitutional oath before members of parliament, beginning a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy following the death of his father, King Harald V.

Haakon VIII appeared before the Norwegian parliament on Tuesday to pledge his commitment to governing the kingdom in accordance with the country’s Constitution and laws. In his oath, the new monarch also asked for divine guidance as he assumed his responsibilities.

The ceremony follows the death of Harald V, who passed away on Friday at the age of 89 after a long reign. His death brings an end to an era for Norway and marks the transition of the crown to his successor.

Haakon VIII now assumes the formal duties of head of state, while the Norwegian constitutional system continues to place executive political authority in the hands of the elected government and parliament. The monarchy remains a largely ceremonial institution, with the king representing national unity and performing official constitutional and diplomatic functions.
