Istanbul mayor jailed ahead of corruption trial amid political tensions
A Turkish court has ordered the imprisonment of Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, a key opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, pending his trial on corruption charges. The decision, announced on Sunday, has intensified political unrest in Turkey and raised concerns about democratic principles and judicial independence.
Imamoglu’s arrest follows a raid on his residence earlier in the week, triggering the most significant street protests in Turkey in over a decade. Many view his detention as a strategic move to sideline him from the 2028 presidential race. However, government officials deny any political motivations, asserting that the judiciary operates independently.
Despite his arrest, the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) proceeded with a primary election to endorse Imamoglu as its presidential candidate. Additionally, the party has set up "solidarity boxes" nationwide, allowing non-members to express support for the jailed mayor.
Imamoglu has faced several legal challenges in recent years, including a 2022 conviction for allegedly insulting Turkey’s Supreme Electoral Council. Earlier this week, a university nullified his diploma, citing irregularities in his academic records from a transfer three decades ago, effectively barring him from running for president. Imamoglu has vowed to contest the ruling.
Elected mayor of Istanbul in 2019, Imamoglu dealt a significant political blow to Erdogan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), which had controlled the city for 25 years. After Erdogan’s party contested the election results, a rerun was held, which Imamoglu won again. His re-election in local elections last year further strengthened the CHP’s position against the ruling party.
The mayor’s imprisonment is seen as an escalation of the government’s crackdown on opposition figures, heightening political tensions as Turkey moves toward its next elections.
