Most Americans oppose proposed renaming of Lake Ontario, poll finds

A majority of Americans oppose President Donald Trump’s proposal to rename Lake Ontario, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, highlighting significant public resistance to the administration’s approach to relations with Canada.

The survey found that 63% of respondents were against changing the lake’s name, while only 14% supported the proposal. Another 21% said they did not know or were unsure about the issue.

The results also revealed a clear partisan divide. While 33% of Republican respondents supported the measure, 43% opposed it. Among Democrats, support was considerably lower, with just 6% backing the proposal.

The poll comes amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. Respondents were also asked about the broader dispute over tariffs, with 46% saying they considered the United States more responsible for the conflict with Canada.

The trade confrontation has intensified following the introduction of US tariffs on a range of Canadian goods. Canada has responded with reciprocal measures, while further increases on products such as automobiles and steel have also been discussed. Only 20% of those surveyed supported raising tariffs on additional Canadian imports to 50%, compared with 57% who opposed such a move.

Despite the growing tensions, most Americans appear to favor a negotiated solution. Some 68% of respondents said the United States should be willing to make concessions in its negotiations with Canada, even if Washington does not secure most of its demands. By comparison, 25% preferred maintaining a tougher position.

Economic concerns were also prominent in the survey. Around 40% of participants expected the trade measures to have a negative impact on their personal finances, while only 4% anticipated a positive effect.

Economists have warned that prolonged tariff disputes could increase costs for American businesses and consumers. The close integration of the US and Canadian economies means that products often rely on supply chains and components crossing the border several times before reaching their final market.

The findings suggest that, despite political efforts to adopt a tougher stance toward Canada, many Americans remain cautious about policies that could deepen economic tensions or affect household finances.
