Morocco and Japan discuss strengthening security cooperation in Rabat

Morocco and Japan are seeking to deepen their security partnership as officials from both countries discuss ways to expand cooperation in the face of evolving regional and international security challenges.

Abdelatif Hammouchi, Director General of National Security and Director General of National Territorial Surveillance, received Japan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Morocco, Masahiro Nakata, in Rabat on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral security cooperation and broadening the scope of the partnership between the two countries. Both sides reviewed a number of issues of common interest, while exchanging views on recent international and regional developments with implications for Morocco and Japan.

During the talks, the officials expressed their shared interest in further developing cooperation across areas related to security and law enforcement. The discussions reflect the two countries’ broader efforts to strengthen institutional coordination and maintain regular dialogue on emerging security concerns.

Moroccan security authorities have increasingly emphasized international cooperation as an important component of efforts to address threats that cross national borders. Partnerships with foreign counterparts can facilitate the exchange of expertise and information while supporting coordinated responses to complex security challenges.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of cooperation in confronting terrorism and transnational organized crime. Such threats often require coordination between national security institutions and international partners, particularly as criminal networks and extremist groups continue to adapt to changing technologies and operating environments.

The talks between Hammouchi and the Japanese ambassador form part of Morocco’s ongoing engagement with international security and police partners. Rabat has sought to strengthen coordination with friendly countries and international organizations in order to promote shared security priorities and improve collective responses to emerging threats.
