France: The start of Ramadan is officially confirmed for Saturday, March 1st

Ramadan is set to begin this Saturday, March 1st, 2025, in France, as confirmed by official statements from the Grande Mosquée de Paris and the French Council of the Muslim Faith. The start of Ramadan will coincide with the Night of Doubt, which will occur from Friday, February 28th, to Saturday, March 1st. During this time, a new crescent moon must be sighted.

On the morning of March 1st, the Grande Mosquée de Paris encourages Muslims in France to engage in additional acts of worship to spiritually prepare for the upcoming month of fasting, prayer, and generosity. Throughout Ramadan, Muslims will fast from dawn until sunset to commemorate the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.

Ramadan is expected to conclude on March 29th with another Night of Doubt, followed by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of fasting. Eid al-Fitr will occur on the day after the final fast. The end of Ramadan also marks the beginning of the countdown to Eid al-Adha, or the "Great Festival," which will take place 70 days later.

The start date of Ramadan shifts each year due to the lunar nature of the Islamic calendar, advancing by about 10 to 12 days each year in the Gregorian calendar used in France. This variation is a key aspect of Islamic tradition and can differ between countries.
