Ukraine and Hungary seek new dialogue on minority rights
Ukraine and Hungary have agreed to launch a new round of consultations focused on the rights and concerns of the Hungarian minority living in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region. The announcement reflects an effort by both countries to improve diplomatic relations after years of tensions surrounding minority policies and regional cooperation.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described his recent conversation with Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban as “constructive and substantive.” According to the Ukrainian minister, both sides agreed to organize expert-level talks aimed at finding practical and lasting solutions regarding the Hungarian community in western Ukraine.
The Zakarpattia region, located near the Hungarian border, is home to a significant ethnic Hungarian population. Discussions related to language rights, education policies, and cultural identity have frequently created disagreements between Kyiv and Budapest in recent years.
Ukraine stated that it is ready to cooperate with Hungary on all major bilateral issues, including minority rights, with the objective of rebuilding trust and strengthening good-neighbor relations between the two countries.
The diplomatic initiative comes at an important moment for regional stability in Europe, as Ukraine continues to seek stronger international partnerships while managing domestic reforms and security challenges linked to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Observers believe that renewed dialogue between Kyiv and Budapest could help reduce political tensions and improve cooperation within European institutions. Hungary, a member of the European Union and NATO, has repeatedly emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of ethnic Hungarians living abroad.
Both governments are expected to continue discussions in the coming weeks as experts work on proposals intended to address concerns from both sides and encourage a more stable bilateral relationship.
