Humpback whale “Timmy” confirmed dead after disputed rescue mission

Danish authorities confirmed Saturday that the humpback whale found dead near the island of Anholt was the same animal that drew widespread attention in Germany after repeated strandings along Baltic Sea coastlines. The confirmation closes one of Europe’s most debated wildlife rescue operations in recent years.

The whale’s carcass washed ashore Thursday around 75 meters from the coastline in the Kattegat Strait between Denmark and Sweden. The discovery came roughly two weeks after the whale, known as “Timmy,” had been released into the North Sea following a large-scale rescue mission. Danish environmental officials said favorable weather conditions allowed investigators to recover a GPS tracking device still attached to the whale’s back, confirming its identity.

Timmy first appeared near Germany’s Baltic coast in early March, far from the species’ normal Atlantic habitat. The whale repeatedly became stranded in shallow waters near Wismar and later developed severe skin damage linked to the Baltic Sea’s low salinity. Rescue teams treated the lesions with zinc ointment as concerns over the animal’s health intensified.

German authorities officially halted rescue efforts on April 1 after scientists concluded the whale’s survival chances were extremely limited. A privately funded initiative led by entrepreneurs Walter Gunz and Karin Walter-Mommert nevertheless continued the operation. Rescuers later secured the 12,000 kilogram whale in harnesses and guided it through a specially dredged channel onto a water-filled barge near Poel island before towing it toward northern Denmark.

The whale was released into the North Sea around 70 kilometers off Skagen on May 2. The donors behind the operation did not disclose the final cost, though German media described the expenses as substantial. The International Whaling Commission had strongly criticized the mission before the release, warning that the intervention imposed severe stress on an already critically ill animal with little realistic chance of recovery.

Marine scientists from the German Oceanographic Museum also questioned the rescue strategy and said long-term survival was highly unlikely. The case fueled a broader debate over whether costly interventions for severely weakened marine mammals should continue when scientific assessments predict almost certain failure.

Environmental groups argued that the attention surrounding Timmy should instead focus on wider threats facing whales and dolphins. Greenpeace campaigner Thilo Maack said thousands of marine mammals die every year after becoming trapped in fishing nets, calling for stronger action on systemic conservation issues rather than isolated rescue attempts.

Till Backhaus, environment minister for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, defended the decision to authorize the operation despite the outcome. He said experts had not completely ruled out the possibility of survival and argued that authorities had attempted to give the whale a final chance.

Danish authorities said they do not plan to remove the carcass or conduct further examinations. Officials stated that whale strandings are considered part of the natural process and should not be disturbed by additional human intervention.
