Leadership in Conflict Zelenskyy Highlights Trump's Influence and Global Unity's Role in Ending the Ukraine War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has lauded former U.S. President Donald Trump as a leader capable of influencing Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the need for global unity to achieve a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.

Following recent discussions with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Zelenskyy described the meetings as productive and underscored the importance of international cooperation in resolving the conflict. “We know that America has the capacity to accomplish remarkable things – things that others have not been able to achieve. To succeed in ending this war, we need unity – the unity of America, Europe, and everyone in the world who values security – as well as strong positions and guarantees for peace,” Zelenskyy stated on Tuesday.

Zelenskyy also expressed his belief that Putin fears decisive leadership. He remarked that Putin “fears only him [Trump] and, perhaps, China,” emphasizing that bold and resolute actions are essential for bringing the war to a just conclusion.

Trump has previously called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations to end the ongoing conflict. However, his approach to resolving the war remains ambiguous, raising concerns among Ukraine's supporters about potential compromises, such as reductions in military aid or concessions of Ukrainian territory to Russia.

During his presidential campaign, Trump asserted his ability to end the conflict within 24 hours, though he did not provide specific details about his strategy. His recent appointment of Keith Kellogg, a retired general, as a special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine war has further fueled speculation. Kellogg has proposed that Ukraine's NATO membership application be delayed and has tied U.S. military aid to Kyiv’s engagement in peace talks with Moscow. He also suggested offering Russia partial sanctions relief in exchange for a peace agreement and proposed taxing Russian energy sales to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction.

Zelenskyy, for his part, expressed openness to innovative solutions. He proposed deploying Western troops in Ukraine to ensure security under a potential peace agreement, contingent on clear timelines for Ukraine's NATO and European Union membership.

At the same time, Zelenskyy rejected suggestions to lower Ukraine’s military draft age from 25 to 18, citing the importance of prioritizing advanced equipment and training over increasing the number of conscripts. “We must focus on equipping existing brigades. The priority should be providing missiles and lowering Russia’s military potential, not Ukraine’s draft age. The goal should be to preserve as many lives as possible, not to preserve weapons in storages,” he said.

Zelenskyy’s remarks underline his commitment to securing a lasting peace while balancing the need for military readiness and international support. As the conflict persists, the role of global leaders and unified strategies will remain critical in shaping the path forward for Ukraine.
