France Acknowledges Morocco's Position: Ambassador Signals New Era in Franco-Moroccan Relations

French Ambassador to Morocco Christophe Lecourtier has outlined a significant shift in France's diplomatic stance toward Morocco, particularly regarding the Sahara issue. Speaking at the inauguration of the Moroccan Innovation Circle (MIC) in Rabat, Lecourtier candidly addressed the evolution of French policy and the path toward stronger bilateral relations.

"We convinced our authorities, including the President of the Republic, that it was not too late to catch up with the Moroccan train," Lecourtier stated, acknowledging the previous diplomatic tensions between Paris and Rabat. These strains had largely stemmed from France's hesitancy to recognize Morocco's sovereignty over Sahara.

The ambassador described a period of misunderstanding where France had "lost its way in a somewhat aggressive manner," leading to communication challenges between the two nations. This diplomatic disconnect widened as Morocco maintained its firm position on Sahara while France adopted a more cautious approach.

However, the tide turned significantly when France officially recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Sahara and endorsed its autonomy plan in July. President Emmanuel Macron formalized this position in a letter to King Mohammed VI during the 25th anniversary of his ascension to the throne.

This diplomatic realignment has already yielded tangible results. During a recent three-day visit by President Macron and France's first lady to Morocco, the two nations signed 22 agreements valued at €10 billion. These agreements span various sectors, including food security, energy, and infrastructure development.

Lecourtier highlighted several key areas of ongoing cooperation, particularly emphasizing the role of student exchanges in strengthening bilateral ties. He noted that Moroccan students studying in France serve as cultural bridges, fostering deeper understanding between the two nations.

The ambassador also recognized King Mohammed VI's recent diplomatic intervention, which secured the release of two French nationals detained in Burkina Faso. This successful mediation further exemplifies the strengthening ties between the two countries.

Looking ahead, Lecourtier emphasized collaborative efforts in renewable energy development, where Morocco has made substantial progress in solar and wind power initiatives. The automotive industry has emerged as another promising area for bilateral cooperation, with France expressing interest in expanding production capabilities.

This diplomatic renaissance marks a new chapter in Franco-Moroccan relations, built on mutual recognition, strategic alignment, and shared economic interests. The ambassador's candid acknowledgment of past misunderstandings and commitment to future cooperation signals a mature and pragmatic approach to bilateral relations between these historic partners.
