Macron orders stronger border controls after migrant surge toward Ceuta

French President Emmanuel Macron has instructed Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez to strengthen controls along France’s border with Spain following a recent surge in migrant arrivals toward the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

According to officials close to the French presidency, Macron requested increased monitoring measures after large numbers of migrants from Morocco attempted to reach Ceuta, a Spanish territory located on the northern coast of Africa. The move reflects growing European concerns over pressure on migration routes linking North Africa and the European Union.

The French president also indicated that France is prepared to provide assistance to Spanish authorities if requested, including through Frontex, the European Union agency responsible for supporting border management operations across member states.

The announcement comes as Spanish authorities face heightened challenges managing repeated attempts to enter Ceuta by land and sea. The enclave has become a key point on migration routes toward Europe due to its geographic position bordering Morocco.

French authorities have not announced specific details regarding the additional border measures or the number of personnel that could be deployed. However, the government’s response highlights broader European efforts to coordinate migration control policies amid increased pressure at external EU borders.

The situation has renewed discussions among European countries about cooperation with neighboring states, border surveillance and the role of EU agencies in responding to sudden migration movements.
