Morocco Reaffirms Unwavering Commitment to Championing Human Rights on the Global Stage

Morocco's dedication to promoting human rights worldwide was on full display at the 2nd International Seminar on National Mechanisms for the Implementation and Reporting on Human Rights, held from May 8-9 in Asunción, Paraguay. The event featured a keynote address by Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, who emphasized King Mohammed VI's vision of human rights as the "foundation of a modern, just, and peaceful society."

Bourita's remarks underscored the importance of the seminar, which followed a similar gathering in Marrakech a year earlier, highlighting Morocco's ongoing commitment to fostering an international network dedicated to implementing and reporting on human rights. He pointed out that the convergence of Morocco, Paraguay, and Portugal was not "a coincidence" but "the result of a common commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights."

In his speech, Bourita acknowledged the crucial role that human rights play in various national projects, such as the family code, the National Initiative for Human Development, the Development Model for the Southern Provinces, the New Development Model, and the generalization of social protection. He noted that these projects are supported by a "solid institutional architecture for human rights" as laid out in the 2011 Constitution.

Bourita's address demonstrated Morocco's proactive approach to engaging with international human rights mechanisms, characterized by consistent communication and transparency with human rights bodies. This approach has earned the country international recognition, culminating in its election to the presidency of the UN Human Rights Council for 2024. Morocco received the endorsement of 30 out of 47 member states, which signifies a strong vote of confidence in its human rights record.

As Morocco takes on the presidency of this esteemed global body, the Foreign Ministry hailed the election as a testament to the "confidence and credibility inspired by Morocco's foreign action" under His Majesty King Mohammed VI's leadership, both in Africa and on the international stage. Morocco's commitment to human rights, as a core principle in its national and global activities, reinforces its role as a champion of this vital cause.
