Infant formula: popote recalls two batches in France over toxin threshold change
The French baby food brand Popote has announced the recall of two batches of first-stage infant formula in France, citing a recent tightening of safety thresholds related to cereulide, a bacterial toxin.
According to the company, the decision follows new guidelines introduced by the French Ministry of Agriculture, which lowered the acceptable limit for cereulide in infant products. Although a harmonized European framework is still under discussion, Popote said it chose to act immediately as a precautionary measure.
Cereulide is a toxin produced by certain bacteria and has been linked to food safety alerts worldwide. In recent years, its presence has led to recalls of infant formula in dozens of countries, prompting health authorities to reassess existing standards.
The European Commission has tasked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) with issuing a scientific opinion on cereulide and appropriate regulatory thresholds. Popote stated that its recall reflects a commitment to consumer safety and transparency, despite the absence of binding EU-wide rules at this stage.
Consumers affected by the recall have been advised to stop using the products and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
