Richard Duke Buchan III: A seasoned diplomat leading U.S. representation in Morocco
Richard Duke Buchan III currently serves as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to the Kingdom of Morocco. With a career spanning finance, politics, and international diplomacy, he brings to Rabat a wealth of experience shaped by decades of global engagement and strategic leadership.
A strong background in global finance
Before entering the diplomatic arena, Ambassador Buchan built a distinguished career in the private sector. In 2001, he founded Hunter Global Investors L.P., a private asset management firm initially based in New York and later relocated to Palm Beach, Florida. As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, he led the company’s growth and investment strategy until his appointment as U.S. Ambassador.
Earlier in his career, Buchan held senior roles within major financial institutions. He served as Managing Director at a prominent New York hedge fund and previously worked as Vice President in the global financial institutions group at the investment banking division of Merrill Lynch & Co. These positions provided him with deep insight into international markets and economic policy.
Political leadership and national service
Ambassador Buchan has also played an influential role in American political life. Most recently, he served as National Finance Chairman of the Republican National Committee. In this capacity, he helped oversee a historic fundraising effort that generated a record 1.2 billion dollars in support of the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign.
This experience reinforced his reputation as a strategic organizer and trusted figure within the U.S. political establishment, complementing his later diplomatic responsibilities.
Previous diplomatic experience in Europe
His current mission in Morocco is not Buchan’s first diplomatic assignment. From 2017 to 2021, he served as the United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain and the Principality of Andorra. During that period, he worked to strengthen bilateral ties and advance American interests across Europe.
One of the key achievements of his tenure in Madrid was the negotiation of a landmark tax agreement between the United States and Spain, which enhanced trade and investment flows between the two nations. He also promoted closer cooperation within NATO and advocated for stronger commitments from allied partners.
A global outlook and deep familiarity with Morocco
Over the course of more than four decades, Richard Duke Buchan III has traveled, lived, and conducted business in more than fifty countries, including Morocco. This longstanding familiarity with the region gives him valuable perspective in his current role in Rabat.
His academic background reflects his international orientation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has pursued additional studies at the University of Valencia and the University of Seville in Spain, the French Institute in Villefranche-sur-Mer, and the CERAN language school in Spa, Belgium.
Ambassador Buchan is fluent in Spanish, proficient in French, and has working knowledge of Catalan, Italian, and German—skills that enhance his ability to engage effectively on the global stage.
Personal commitments and family life
Born in Henderson, North Carolina, Ambassador Buchan remains closely connected to his roots. He continues to manage family-owned farms in North Carolina and upstate New York, where he cultivates truffles, more than one hundred varieties of heirloom tomatoes, and other crops, while also raising horses.
He and his wife Hannah are the parents of one daughter and two sons, all of whom have earned the rank of Eagle Scout, reflecting the family’s long-standing commitment to community service and personal development.
