Women’s Empowerment: Morocco’s experience highlighted in Egypt
Morocco’s approach to women’s empowerment and the promotion of women’s rights was showcased on Sunday in Cairo during an international conference bringing together representatives from member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Speaking at a session focused on the role of media, culture, and the arts in shaping societal awareness of women’s positive roles, Morocco’s Minister of Solidarity, Social Integration and Family, Naima Ben Yahya, emphasized that the Kingdom’s experience is rooted in a balanced approach. She noted that Morocco has succeeded in reconciling its international commitments on women’s rights with universal values while preserving its national and cultural specificities.
The minister highlighted Morocco’s efforts to develop responsible media discourse aimed at combating discrimination and dismantling stereotypes targeting women. In this regard, she referred to the National Charter for Improving the Image of Women in the Media, which includes a series of commitments and initiatives designed to promote fair and respectful representation.
Ben Yahya also underlined the contribution of religious institutions, particularly the role of the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs in raising awareness through Friday sermons about the dangers of violence against women. These messages, she said, are grounded in Islamic values that promote dignity, equality, cooperation, and non-discrimination.
Another key aspect of Morocco’s experience is the training of mourchidates (female religious guides), who play an important role in spreading messages that encourage gender equality and social cohesion.
Participants at the conference stressed that media, culture, and the arts are powerful tools in shaping social perceptions and behaviors. They called for the ethical and professional use of media content to support public policies, counter symbolic violence, and respond to the challenges posed by rapid digital transformations.
