Ligue 1: Moroccan International Souffian El Karouani close to joining Marseille
Olympique de Marseille are reportedly close to completing the signing of Moroccan international left-back Souffian El Karouani from Dutch side FC Utrecht, according to French media reports released on Monday.
The 25-year-old defender, whose contract with Utrecht is set to expire in June, could make the move to the Ligue 1 club before the closure of the winter transfer window, as reported by sports daily L’Équipe.
El Karouani has been closely monitored by Marseille’s recruitment team for several months and was initially identified as a priority target for the summer. However, recent difficulties in the left-back position, including the injury of Emerson Palmieri, are said to have prompted the club’s management to accelerate negotiations.
Born in 2000 in ’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, El Karouani developed through local youth systems before continuing his progression at NEC Nijmegen, prior to joining FC Utrecht in 2023.
Known for his offensive qualities and technical profile, El Karouani has earned five international caps with the Moroccan national team, the Lions of the Atlas.
