Morocco's Tourism Boom: 13.1 Million Visitors Signal Strong Economic Recovery
Morocco's tourism sector is experiencing a remarkable resurgence, with visitor numbers soaring to 13.1 million by the end of September 2024. This impressive figure represents a substantial increase of approximately two million tourists compared to the same period in 2023, according to recent data released by the country's Ministry of Tourism.
The month of September stood out as particularly noteworthy, welcoming 1.3 million visitors - a 33% increase from September 2023. Even more striking was the 40% rise in foreign tourist arrivals during this month, underlining Morocco's growing appeal on the global stage.
Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor expressed pride in this achievement, describing the momentum as "undeniable." She attributed the success to a multi-faceted strategy aligned with the country's tourism roadmap. Key elements of this approach include expanding air connections, launching targeted promotional campaigns, and developing modern infrastructure alongside attractive tourism experiences.
"Our country is increasingly shining on the international stage. Our targeted efforts are bearing fruit," Ammor stated. The minister's enthusiasm reflects the government's broader ambitions for the sector, with Morocco aiming to attract an ambitious 26 million visitors annually by 2030.
To further boost tourism, the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT) has launched a new communication campaign called "Ntla9awfbladna" or "Let's meet in our country." This initiative aims to encourage domestic tourism, inviting Moroccan residents to explore their own country's diverse attractions.
The campaign's timing is strategic, coinciding with school holidays to promote travel during this period. It also emphasizes the importance of using common transport means when traveling, potentially aiming to promote sustainability and ease congestion in popular tourist areas.
Morocco's tourism resurgence is not just a triumph for the sector but a significant indicator of the country's economic recovery and global appeal. As the nation continues to invest in its tourism infrastructure and marketing efforts, it appears well-positioned to achieve its ambitious 2030 goal, cementing its status as a premier global travel destination.
