Drone crashes near Polish military depot, triggering security investigation
Polish military authorities have launched an investigation after an unidentified drone crashed inside a military compound in northeastern Poland, landing only a few meters from a weapons storage facility. The incident has raised fresh concerns over airspace security around sensitive military infrastructure.
The crash occurred in late January at a military installation near the town of Przasnysz, located north of Warsaw. According to initial reports, personnel on duty noticed the unmanned aerial vehicle flying over the base shortly before it lost control and fell close to an arms depot within the compound.
Following the incident, soldiers secured the drone and transferred it to a protected facility for examination. Poland’s military police subsequently opened formal investigative procedures, including technical analysis of the device and interviews with witnesses present at the scene.
The episode comes at a time of heightened vigilance in Poland and across NATO countries, where unauthorized drone activity near strategic sites has become an increasing concern. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, security services in Central and Eastern Europe have reported a rise in drone sightings near military bases, energy facilities, and transport hubs.
While authorities have stated that there is currently no evidence of a hostile act, they have not excluded any possibilities. Investigators are examining whether the crash resulted from operator error, technical failure, or potential reconnaissance activity.
Poland’s Ministry of Defense has so far refrained from disclosing details about the drone’s origin, capabilities, or whether it carried surveillance equipment, as the investigation remains ongoing.
