India and the European Union seal a landmark free trade agreement
India and the European Union have officially concluded a long-awaited free trade agreement, marking a major milestone after more than two decades of negotiations. The deal is expected to unlock significant economic opportunities for both sides at a time of global uncertainty and rising geopolitical tensions.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the agreement as transformative, highlighting its potential to benefit India’s vast population as well as millions of European citizens. Together, India and the EU represent roughly a quarter of global economic output and nearly one third of worldwide trade, giving the pact considerable international weight.
The agreement aims to boost bilateral trade by reducing tariffs across a wide range of sectors. Trade between the two partners has grown steadily in recent years, driven by strong demand for goods and services. European companies are particularly interested in gaining greater access to India’s fast-growing consumer market, while India seeks increased investment and advanced technologies to support its industrial development.
For the European Union, the deal offers unprecedented access to a traditionally protected market, providing a competitive edge in key industrial and agri-food sectors. India, in turn, is expected to benefit from improved access to European markets for products such as textiles and pharmaceuticals.
Beyond trade, the partnership also includes provisions on labor mobility, academic exchanges, and cooperation in security and defense. Both sides see the agreement as a strategic response to global trade disruptions and a way to reduce dependence on dominant economic powers.
The accord signals a shared commitment to openness, cooperation, and strategic alignment in an increasingly fragmented world.
