Merz calls for a more independent Europe amid global challenges
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Europe to strengthen its independence in the face of global instability and shifting power dynamics. Speaking at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange's New Year reception in Eschborn, Merz highlighted the rise of major powers that prioritize influence over rules.
He emphasized that Europe must act united to secure its sovereignty, economic prosperity, and technological autonomy. “If we as Europeans act in a united and determined manner, we can make a difference in the world,” Merz said, calling for stronger defense capabilities and more competitive economic conditions.
Merz also noted that transatlantic relations have changed, urging Europe to adapt to the current global transformation rather than relying on nostalgia for the past. He presented a vision of a sovereign, free, peaceful, and economically robust Europe.
