Iran arrests 139 foreign nationals amid protests
Iranian authorities have arrested 139 foreign nationals in the central city of Yazd in connection with the protests that began in December 2025, local media reported Tuesday.
According to Tasnim News Agency, citing Yazd Police Chief Ahmad Negahban, the individuals are suspected of organizing, inciting, and participating in the unrest. Some were allegedly in contact with networks outside Iran. The nationalities of the detainees have not been disclosed.
The protests, which initially focused on rising living costs, evolved into a broader movement challenging the government. Iranian authorities have officially reported more than 3,000 deaths during the unrest, mostly security personnel or civilians allegedly killed by “terrorists” acting on behalf of foreign powers.
Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) in the United States has confirmed 6,854 deaths, mainly protesters, while other rights organizations suggest even higher numbers.
