Global Reactions to Biden’s Withdrawal from U.S. Presidential Race

World leaders have reacted to President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 U.S. presidential race after facing mounting scrutiny over his age and health.

Here are key international responses to Biden's departure

Israel

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed deep appreciation for Biden’s longstanding support of Israel. "As the first U.S. President to visit Israel during wartime, and a recipient of the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honor, President Biden has been a steadfast ally. His contributions symbolize the enduring bond between our nations," Herzog noted on X.

Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged Biden’s "tough but principled decision" and extended gratitude for his consistent backing amid Russia’s invasion. “We remain profoundly grateful for President Biden’s leadership during our country’s most challenging times. His support has been crucial in resisting Putin’s advances and maintaining our resolve,” Zelenskyy stated on X. He added, "The ongoing situation in Ukraine and across Europe remains complex, and we hope that America's strong leadership continues to thwart Russian aggression."

Russia

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Moscow's focus remains on its objectives in Ukraine rather than the U.S. electoral outcome. “Our priority is the success of the special military operation, not the results of the U.S. elections,” Peskov told state media.

United Kingdom

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed respect for Biden’s decision and looked forward to continuing collaboration. “I trust that President Biden’s choice reflects what he believes is best for the American people, and I look forward to working with him in the time remaining,” Starmer remarked on X.

Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised Biden as a “great man” whose actions were driven by a deep love for his country. “President Biden has been a true friend and partner to Canadians. Our thanks extend to him and the First Lady for their dedicated service,” Trudeau shared on X.

Australia

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded Biden for his leadership and service. “The Australia-U.S. Alliance has strengthened under Biden's tenure, with shared commitments to democratic values, security, economic prosperity, and climate action,” Albanese stated on X.

Germany

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz commended Biden for his contributions to global stability. “President Biden’s efforts have significantly advanced transatlantic cooperation, strengthened NATO, and positioned the U.S. as a reliable partner. His choice not to seek re-election deserves recognition,” Scholz said on X.

Spain

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described Biden’s decision as “brave and dignified.” “His leadership helped the U.S. recover from the pandemic's economic impact and defend democracy amid the Capitol assault. His support for Ukraine against Russian aggression has been exemplary,” Sanchez wrote on X.

Poland

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recognized Biden’s difficult decisions and their positive impact on global security and democracy. “President Biden’s final decision, undoubtedly one of the hardest of his career, was driven by his commitment to making the world a safer place,” Tusk commented on X.

Czech Republic

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala highlighted Biden’s long-term service and his statesmanship. “Biden’s decision reflects his dedication and responsibility. We hope that the upcoming U.S. presidential election will yield a capable successor,” Fiala stated.
