US launches renewed strikes on Iran after deadly attack on American troops
The United States has intensified its military campaign against Iran after two American service members were killed in an Iranian strike in Jordan, marking a significant escalation in the rapidly deteriorating security situation across the Middle East.
According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces carried out a new wave of airstrikes early Sunday targeting military facilities and units of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) believed to have been involved in the attacks against U.S. personnel on July 17. The operation represents the eighth consecutive night of American military action against Iranian targets.
Washington signals a tougher military response
U.S. officials described the latest operation as a direct response to the deaths of the two soldiers, the first American military fatalities reported since hostilities resumed earlier this month. A third service member remains missing following the missile and drone attacks in Jordan, adding urgency to Washington's military response.
CENTCOM stated that the strikes focused on military infrastructure and IRGC elements allegedly responsible for planning or launching attacks against American forces stationed in the region.
Explosions reported in southern Iran
Iranian media reported explosions in several locations within the southern province of Hormozgan. News agencies identified strikes near the port city of Sirik, overlooking the strategic Strait of Hormuz, while additional reports indicated military activity close to Hajiabad.
Although Iranian authorities acknowledged the attacks, they have not released a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by the American operation.
Iran retaliates with drone attacks
In response, Iran announced that it had launched explosive drones targeting two military bases in Kuwait used by U.S. forces. The retaliatory operation was reported by Iranian state television as tensions between the two countries continued to rise.
Senior Iranian military officials warned that any further U.S. military action would provoke an even stronger response. General Ali Abdollahi stated that Iran's armed forces were prepared to impose significantly greater costs on the United States if additional strikes were carried out.
Regional conflict enters a more dangerous phase
The exchange of strikes highlights the increasingly volatile security environment across the Middle East, where military confrontations now extend beyond Iran and Israel to include U.S. military assets stationed throughout the region.
With both Washington and Tehran adopting increasingly forceful positions, diplomatic efforts face mounting challenges as concerns grow that the conflict could expand further, threatening regional stability, international shipping routes and broader global security interests.
