US backs renewed UN-led efforts on Sahara after Madrid talks
The United States has renewed its backing for a negotiated and lasting settlement to the Sahara conflict following diplomatic talks held in Madrid with regional and international participants. A senior US official said Washington remains committed to a solution described as fair, durable, and acceptable to all parties, with the objective of supporting long-term peace and stability across the region.
The comments followed meetings in the Spanish capital that brought together senior delegations from the United States and the United Nations with representatives of Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania. The discussions centered on advancing the political process outlined in United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in 2025, which sets a framework for moving negotiations forward on Sahara.
US officials said the talks reflected continued engagement by Washington in support of UN-led mediation efforts and dialogue among the parties involved. The approach, they said, is intended to help create conditions for regional stability while addressing the interests of communities affected by the prolonged dispute.
The Madrid meetings highlighted coordination between the United States and the United Nations in facilitating dialogue and sustaining momentum around the resolution. Participants examined practical steps linked to its implementation and stressed the need for ongoing diplomatic engagement to keep the political process active and focused on a negotiated outcome.
