UK regulator investigates Telegram over child safety concerns
The United Kingdom’s communications regulator, Ofcom, has launched an investigation into the messaging platform Telegram following concerns over the possible sharing of child sexual abuse material and the misuse of online chat services by predators.
According to the regulator, evidence suggests that certain online spaces linked to Telegram may have been used to distribute illegal content and to target minors through grooming tactics. The investigation is part of a broader effort to enforce the country’s Online Safety Act.
Ofcom has also opened parallel inquiries into other chat services, including Teen Chat and Chat Avenue, to assess whether they are meeting their legal responsibilities to protect children from online exploitation.
The regulator stated that despite previous engagement with the companies involved, it remains unsatisfied with the level of protection currently provided to users in the United Kingdom.
Officials warned that platforms must strengthen their safety measures or face serious regulatory consequences under existing legislation. The investigation highlights growing pressure on digital companies to improve content moderation and child protection systems.
