Türkiye accelerates maritime digital transformation with internet of shipping

Türkiye is stepping up efforts to modernize its maritime sector through the launch of two major initiatives aimed at enhancing digital infrastructure and navigational safety. The projects, known as the Internet of Shipping and NAVDAT, are designed to strengthen sea communication systems and support real-time monitoring across key waterways.

According to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, the initiatives mark a significant milestone in the country’s long-term maritime strategy. He emphasized that the projects will reinforce communication networks, particularly in strategic passages such as the Bosphorus, where vessel traffic is dense and operational precision is essential.

The Internet of Shipping platform aims to provide continuous digital tracking of vessels, navigational aids, buoys, and potential environmental risks. By integrating remote communication systems with existing infrastructure, authorities will be able to monitor maritime activity more effectively. Data collected from floating navigation devices and lighthouse installations — including hydrographic, meteorological, and vessel movement information — will support safer navigation and faster emergency response.

Meanwhile, the NAVDAT system is set to modernize maritime communication by enabling uninterrupted, around-the-clock data transmission. Stations based in Istanbul will facilitate the rapid exchange of text, graphics, and multimedia between ships and shore authorities. Officials say the system will increase data capacity, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate the delivery of safety alerts.

Together, the two initiatives reflect Türkiye’s ambition to align its maritime infrastructure with international standards while embracing digital innovation. As global shipping becomes increasingly technology-driven, authorities view these investments as essential to maintaining competitiveness and ensuring secure navigation routes.
