Ivory Coast reaffirms support for Morocco Sahara sovereignty
Ivory Coast has reiterated its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, including the Sahara region, following high-level talks held in Rabat between senior officials from both countries. The statement confirms Abidjan’s continued diplomatic alignment with Morocco on a long-standing regional dispute.
The position was expressed after discussions between Morocco’s foreign minister and Ivory Coast’s minister of state for foreign affairs during an official working visit. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, expanding political coordination, and reinforcing ties between the two governments.
Ivory Coast also expressed support for United Nations Security Council resolution 2797, which describes Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a credible and serious basis for reaching a durable political solution to the dispute. This stance adds to a growing list of international endorsements for Morocco’s proposal.
The Ivorian government also recalled the opening of its consulate general in Laayoune in 2020, a diplomatic move widely viewed as a signal of support for Morocco’s position in the territory. The decision marked an expansion of consular presence in the region and reinforced bilateral engagement.
Both sides underlined the strength of their strategic partnership, built on political trust and cooperation across multiple sectors. They also highlighted a shared commitment to deepening South South collaboration and maintaining coordination on regional and international issues.
