Istanbul strait shipping traffic suspended after cargo vessel malfunction
Maritime traffic in the Istanbul Strait was temporarily suspended in both directions on Sunday after a cargo ship experienced a technical failure near the coastal area of Beşiktaş.
According to Türkiye’s General Directorate of Coastal Safety, the 185-meter dry cargo vessel Zaltron, which was traveling from Egypt to Russia, suffered an engine malfunction while navigating off Kuruçeşme.
Emergency response and safety measures
Following the incident, maritime authorities quickly activated emergency procedures. Tugboats including Kurtarma-3, Kurtarma-5, and Kurtarma-9 were dispatched to assist the disabled vessel.
As a precautionary measure, all vessel movements through the Bosphorus were halted in both directions to ensure navigational safety and prevent further risks in the busy waterway.
Authorities stated that efforts were underway to secure the situation and restore normal traffic as soon as conditions allowed.
