UK net migration nearly halves as immigration policies tighten
Long-term net migration to United Kingdom has nearly halved in 2025, driven by stricter immigration policies introduced in recent years, according to new data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The figures show that net migration fell to 171,000 in the 12 months to December, down sharply from 331,000 a year earlier. This continues a significant downward trend from a peak of 944,000 in 2023, reflecting major changes in the country’s immigration system.
Authorities attribute the decline to a series of policy reforms aimed at reducing the number of arrivals, including tighter visa requirements, higher salary thresholds for skilled workers, and restrictions on international students bringing dependants.
Since the UK’s exit from the European Union, immigration has remained a central political issue, with successive governments implementing measures to control both legal and illegal migration. The current policy framework builds on reforms introduced after Brexit and during the post-pandemic period.
The ONS noted that current migration levels are now close to those recorded before the new immigration system came into force in 2021, when pandemic restrictions and Brexit-related changes were still shaping population movements.
Experts say the sharp decline reflects the combined impact of economic conditions and stricter immigration rules, particularly those introduced in 2024 by the previous government. These included tighter controls on student visas and increased income requirements for skilled workers.
The data is likely to intensify political debate in the United Kingdom, where immigration continues to be a key issue shaping public opinion, labor market needs, and government policy direction.
