Spaniards voice growing frustration over tourism's impact

Local sentiment toward tourism in Spain has turned increasingly negative, according to recent data. In the third quarter of 2025, Spaniards rated their opinion of tourism at a mere 4.3 out of 10, marking a continued decline and highlighting rising discontent with the current tourism model.

Mounting concerns over tourism's effects

Despite fewer overtourism protests compared to the previous year, public dissatisfaction remains strong and appears to be deepening. Residents in popular tourist destinations are increasingly vocal about the negative effects of tourism, citing issues such as overcrowding, pressure on public services, surging living costs, and a declining quality of life.

The economic contributions of tourism, while significant, are perceived by many as no longer outweighing these challenges. Locals in affected areas are calling for meaningful changes to reduce the strain of mass tourism on their communities.

A call for sustainable reform

The survey results underscore a growing divide between the tourism industry's goals and the expectations of Spanish residents. While tourism is a cornerstone of Spain's economy, there is a clear demand for industry reforms that prioritize sustainability and respect for local communities. Spaniards increasingly advocate for a tourism model that balances economic benefits with the preservation of their quality of life and cultural identity.
