Cate Blanchett wins Japan’s prestigious Praemium Imperiale arts award

Australian actress Cate Blanchett has been named one of the recipients of the 2026 Praemium Imperiale, one of Japan’s most prestigious international arts awards and often described as a “Nobel Prize for the arts.”

The Japan Art Association announced this year’s laureates on Tuesday, recognizing Blanchett for her outstanding career across theatre, film and television. Now 57, the actress has earned international acclaim for a wide range of performances, including roles in The Aviator, Blue Jasmine, Carol and Tár.

Established in 1988, the Praemium Imperiale honors leading figures in several artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, architecture, music and theatre or cinema. Each laureate receives an award of 15 million yen, equivalent to roughly €83,000.

The Japan Art Association praised Blanchett as one of the leading actresses of her generation, highlighting the breadth and international impact of her work throughout a career spanning several decades.

The 2026 laureates also include American artist Jenny Holzer, who was recognized in the painting category, British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy and Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind. The music award went to Swedish-born American conductor Herbert Blomstedt.

The Praemium Imperiale is presented annually to artists whose achievements have made a significant contribution to the development of the arts. The awards ceremony for the 2026 winners is scheduled to take place in Tokyo on October 28.

Blanchett’s recognition adds another major international distinction to a career that has established her as one of the most influential figures in contemporary cinema and performing arts.
