US Treasury sanctions 27 Iranian airlines over alleged support for Tehran
The United States has imposed sanctions on 35 entities and one individual, including 27 Iranian airlines, accusing them of supporting activities linked to the Iranian government, according to the US Treasury Department.
The measures target Iranian carriers that had not previously been subjected to US sanctions. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned companies and individuals dealing with the newly sanctioned airlines that they could face exclusion from the international financial system.
Among the airlines added to the sanctions list are Iran Aseman Airlines, Kish Air, Qeshm Air, Zagros Airlines, Iran Airtour, Chabahar Airlines, Sepehran Airlines and Taban Airlines, along with other Iranian aviation companies.
Washington also targeted companies based in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Kazakhstan over alleged links to Mahan Air and ACT Airlines and their role in supporting Iran's aviation sector.
As part of the latest measures, the US Treasury suspended three licenses related to overflight operations involving Iran and the use of US-manufactured aircraft by non-US airlines flying to the country.
The sanctions form part of Washington's broader campaign to tighten economic pressure on Iran. US authorities say the strategy is designed to disrupt financial channels and commercial networks that Tehran allegedly uses to generate revenue for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and circumvent existing sanctions.
The expansion of restrictions places additional pressure on Iran's already heavily constrained aviation industry, while also increasing compliance risks for foreign companies and financial institutions dealing with the targeted carriers.
The latest action underscores Washington's continued reliance on economic sanctions as a tool to restrict Iran's international commercial and financial activities.
