Gulf unified tourist visa expected to simplify travel across six countries

The six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are moving closer to launching a unified tourist visa designed to make regional travel easier for international visitors and strengthen the Gulf’s position as a connected tourism destination.

GCC Secretary-General Jassem Albudaiwi recently said at a conference in Riyadh that the long-awaited initiative is expected to become operational soon. The planned visa would allow eligible foreign visitors to travel between Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman under a single authorization rather than applying separately for each country.

The initiative, commonly referred to as the Gulf unified tourist visa, was formally approved by GCC countries in 2023 as part of broader efforts to encourage tourism and improve mobility across the region. Although authorities have yet to announce a definitive launch date, preparations are continuing, with the system expected to become available in 2026.

The project is intended to simplify the experience for tourists and, potentially, foreign residents of GCC countries who want to visit several member states during the same trip. Applications are expected to be handled through a centralized online system, allowing travelers to submit a single request instead of completing separate visa procedures for individual destinations.

Authorities have not yet released all details concerning the visa’s duration, fees and specific eligibility requirements. However, the scheme is expected to support tourism-related travel, including holidays as well as visits to family and friends, while giving visitors greater flexibility to combine several Gulf destinations in one itinerary.

The unified system could also encourage travelers to extend their stays and visit multiple countries rather than limiting their trips to a single destination. This would support the GCC’s wider strategy of developing tourism as a major economic sector and increasing the region’s appeal to international travelers.

Beyond convenience for visitors, the initiative is expected to have significant economic benefits. Easier movement between the six countries could increase tourist spending, support hotels, restaurants, airlines and other service businesses, and create additional employment opportunities.

The visa also fits into the Gulf states’ broader efforts to diversify their economies beyond oil and gas. Countries across the region have been investing heavily in tourism infrastructure, entertainment, hospitality and major international events, making easier cross-border travel increasingly important to their development strategies.

If implemented as planned, the unified visa could transform the Gulf into a more integrated tourism market, allowing international visitors to experience several destinations through a single travel authorization while strengthening economic and tourism cooperation among the six GCC members.
