OpenAI and Nvidia fuel debate over whether AGI has arrived
The artificial intelligence industry is entering a new phase of debate over artificial general intelligence (AGI), after senior figures at OpenAI and Nvidia suggested that recent advances could mark the beginning of an era in which AI systems approach or exceed human-level capabilities across a broad range of tasks.
Stanford University generally defines AGI as an AI system capable of learning, reasoning and applying knowledge across different fields at a general level comparable to, or beyond, human abilities. Unlike specialized AI tools, AGI is expected to demonstrate broad competence rather than excel at only a limited set of tasks.
The latest claims follow the release of OpenAI’s new Astra model, also referred to as GPT-6 Astra. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared on social media that AGI had arrived, while OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman said the company was moving into what he described as the “AGI era.”
OpenAI has presented Astra as a major advance in computer-based tasks, highlighting capabilities in areas such as software engineering, cybersecurity, scientific work, web browsing and professional applications. The company also pointed to improvements in computer interaction, as well as performance in tasks involving visual understanding and sound recognition.
The claims nevertheless remain part of a broader and highly contested discussion within the technology sector. There is no universally accepted technical threshold for determining when AGI has been achieved, meaning that statements from companies developing increasingly powerful models do not, by themselves, settle the question.
OpenAI’s own researchers have also raised concerns about the growing difficulty of understanding increasingly capable AI systems. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki has warned that as models become more sophisticated, researchers may find it harder to predict precisely what they are capable of doing.
In a recent essay, Pachocki argued that future AI systems could deliver capability improvements comparable to or greater than those seen in recent years. He also raised concerns that increasingly advanced systems could contribute to aspects of their own development, potentially accelerating the pace of progress.
His warning reflects a growing concern among AI researchers and policymakers that technological development may be advancing faster than society’s ability to establish effective safeguards. The rapid expansion of AI since the public launch of ChatGPT in 2022 has intensified competition among major technology companies while governments continue to develop regulatory frameworks.
The European Union has moved ahead with its AI Act, one of the most comprehensive regulatory efforts targeting artificial intelligence. However, questions remain over how existing rules will apply to increasingly autonomous and capable systems.
The debate has also gained urgency following reports of AI agents being used in increasingly complex environments, including software development and cybersecurity. Such developments have prompted researchers to examine not only the benefits of advanced AI but also the possibility of systems operating in ways that are difficult for humans to anticipate.
OpenAI’s latest statements therefore highlight a paradox at the heart of the AGI debate. Companies are celebrating unprecedented advances in machine intelligence while simultaneously acknowledging that the behavior and capabilities of future systems may become increasingly difficult to monitor and understand.
Whether Astra or any other current model genuinely qualifies as AGI remains disputed. What is becoming increasingly difficult to contest, however, is the speed at which AI capabilities are advancing and the growing pressure on governments, researchers and technology companies to prepare for the consequences.
