Spain condemns Iran’s crackdown by summoning its ambassador
Spain has summoned the Iranian ambassador in Madrid to express its strong rejection and condemnation of the authorities’ response to ongoing protests in Iran. The move reflects growing international concern over reports of widespread repression and serious human rights violations.
Speaking on national radio, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares emphasized that the fundamental rights of Iranian citizens must be respected. He stressed that men and women in Iran have the right to demonstrate peacefully and to express their opinions freely, without fear of violence or intimidation.
According to human rights organizations, the crackdown on demonstrations has resulted in hundreds of deaths, prompting several countries to reassess their diplomatic stance toward Tehran. Spain’s decision to formally summon the ambassador is seen as a clear political signal and part of a broader European response.
Madrid also called for an end to what it described as arbitrary arrests, urging Iranian authorities to comply with international human rights standards. While Spain remains committed to diplomatic dialogue, officials underlined that respect for civil liberties is a non-negotiable principle in its foreign policy.
