SOMAS Unveils $40.9 Million Butane Gas Storage Facility in Mohammedia

The Moroccan storage company SOMAS has officially unveiled its fourth butane gas storage cavity in the rural commune of Mohammedia, located 87.1 kilometers from Casablanca.

This ambitious project, which represents a significant investment of MAD 400 million ($40.9 million), has substantially boosted the company’s storage capacity to 310,000 tons, an impressive increase of over 55%. This expansion is a strategic move to cater to the escalating market demand for butane gas in Morocco.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of Morocco’s Minister of Energy, Leila Benali, who emphasized the pivotal role of the new storage cavity in advancing the national energy sector.

“Butane gas is one of the most consumed energy products in Morocco, with an annual growth rate of more than 3% on average,” Benali stated. She highlighted that in 2023, butane gas consumption in Morocco reached 3.2 million tons of oil equivalent, accounting for 26% of the country's total petroleum product consumption.

Tawfiq Hamouni, Chairman of the Board of Directors at SOMAS, expressed pride in the inauguration, viewing it as a testament to the shareholders' dedication to Morocco's energy prospects.

Echoing this sentiment, SOMAS CEO Khalid Baghri voiced his satisfaction with the facility's expansion. He underscored that the enhanced capacity not only ensures a stable and secure supply of butane gas but also supports Morocco's national energy transition through sustainable and innovative solutions.

This development marks a significant milestone for SOMAS and underscores the company's commitment to bolstering Morocco's energy infrastructure and meeting the growing energy needs of its population.
