Russian comedian sentenced to nearly 6 years for offensive jokes
A Moscow court has imprisoned stand-up comedian Artemy Ostanin for five years and nine months in a penal colony over jokes deemed insulting to war veterans and religious believers. This ruling underscores Russia's ongoing crackdown on dissent since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
District Judge Olesya Mendeleyeva of the Meshchansky court found the 29-year-old guilty of inciting hatred through a routine about a legless man and insulting believers' feelings with a sketch involving Jesus Christ. Ostanin also faces a 300,000-rouble fine, roughly $3,900. When asked if he understood the verdict, he retorted to the judge, "To hell with your judicial practice. No, I don't understand," according to reports.
The controversy erupted from video footage of Ostanin joking about being shoved in a Moscow metro by a homeless man he called a "legless skateboarder" who had "jumped on a mine" and skated without legs for 20 years. Throughout the trial, Ostanin insisted the punchline targeted a beggar, not a veteran. His defense submitted a linguistic analysis showing no evidence of hatred. Ultranationalist group Zov Naroda, known for reporting public figures to authorities, amplified the clip and urged an investigation by pushing it to Investigative Committee head Alexander Bastrykin. Pro-war military bloggers spread it further, claiming it mocked wounded Ukrainian frontline soldiers.
Fearing backlash, Ostanin tried to leave Russia in March 2025 but was detained at Minsk airport in Belarus and extradited to Moscow. A Russian presidential human rights council member alleged Belarusian agents beat him with batons, used stun guns in a forest, and caused a spinal fracture plus respiratory damage during transfer. Belarus denied the claims. Rights group Memorial labeled him a political prisoner in June 2025. His lawyer, Mikhail Meshcheryakov, argued Ostanin never posted the joke himself and called the alleged victims "professional informants" scouring the internet for offensive material.
This case highlights broader curbs on free speech in Russia under President Vladimir Putin. Comedians now risk arrest, fines, or "foreign agent" status for critiquing the war or the Kremlin. Notably, Judge Mendeleyeva, who handed down the sentence, was sanctioned by the US Treasury in December 2024 for jailing Moscow councilor Alexei Gorinov for seven years over anti-war remarks. In his final court statement, Ostanin said, "I hope no one ever ends up in the same brutal legal abuse I've endured."
