BMW plans to cut around 8,000 jobs by 2027 amid industry challenges
German automaker BMW is preparing to reduce its workforce by around 8,000 positions by the end of 2027 as part of a voluntary departure program agreed with employee representatives. The measure comes as the luxury car manufacturer faces weaker demand in key markets and growing pressure to improve efficiency.
According to reports, the job reductions will primarily affect administrative staff and employees involved in the development of new products, while production workers are expected to be largely excluded from the program. Most of the planned workforce reduction is expected to take place in Germany.
BMW currently employs around 150,000 people worldwide, including approximately 87,400 in Germany. The restructuring is part of broader efforts by major automakers to adapt their operations to changing market conditions, rising costs and the transition toward new automotive technologies.
The company has faced several challenges this year, including continued weakness in the Chinese market and the economic consequences of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. These factors have contributed to a more cautious outlook for the German manufacturer.
BMW recently lowered its annual forecasts, anticipating a slight decline in vehicle sales and a significant reduction in profit after taxes. The company is also expected to provide further insight into its financial performance when it releases its second-quarter results.
The planned workforce reduction highlights the difficult environment facing the global automotive industry, where manufacturers are seeking to balance investment in electric vehicles, digital technologies and new product development with the need to control costs.
BMW's market valuation has also come under pressure. Since the beginning of the year, the company's market capitalization has fallen substantially, reflecting investor concerns over weaker demand, intense competition and uncertainty surrounding the future of the automotive sector.
The restructuring program is expected to continue through 2027, giving BMW additional time to adjust its workforce while focusing resources on areas considered essential to its long-term competitiveness.
