Kia invests $649 million to produce and sell electric vehicles in Mexico
Kia has announced plans to manufacture and sell a fully electric vehicle in Mexico, reinforcing the country's growing role as a strategic hub for electric vehicle production in North America.
The automaker will invest $649 million in its Mexican operations, according to Hugo Chávez, Kia's managing director in Mexico. The announcement was made during the daily press conference of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
The investment represents another significant commitment by a global automotive manufacturer to expand EV production capacity as demand for electrified vehicles continues to rise.
Mexico strengthens its position in the EV supply chain
Kia's decision highlights Mexico's increasing importance within the global automotive industry, supported by its established manufacturing base, skilled workforce, and close integration with North American supply chains.
Producing electric vehicles locally is expected to enhance Kia's ability to serve regional markets while benefiting from Mexico's extensive network of automotive suppliers and export infrastructure.
The project also aligns with the country's broader ambition to attract investment in advanced manufacturing and clean transportation technologies.
Investment supports long-term electrification plans
The new production program forms part of Kia's global strategy to expand its electric vehicle portfolio and accelerate the transition toward zero-emission mobility.
While the company has not yet disclosed which EV model will be assembled in Mexico or the timeline for production, the investment signals confidence in the country's long-term role within Kia's international manufacturing network.
The locally produced vehicle is also expected to be marketed in Mexico, strengthening the company's presence in one of Latin America's largest automotive markets.
Global automakers continue reshaping manufacturing networks
Kia joins a growing list of international manufacturers investing in electric vehicle production across Mexico as competition intensifies in the global EV market.
The latest investment reflects broader industry efforts to regionalize production, strengthen supply chains, and meet rising consumer demand for electric mobility while supporting future export opportunities throughout North America.
