Tunisia: anti-racism activist Saadia Mosbah sentenced to eight years in prison
Anti-racism activist Saadia Mosbah has been sentenced to eight years in prison, a verdict that has raised concerns about the state of civil society in Tunisia.
Mosbah, known for her work defending migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, had been in detention for nearly two years on charges of financial misconduct, allegations that several non-governmental organizations have repeatedly criticized.
Her lawyer, Hela Ben Salem, described the sentence as “shocking” and suggested it sends a political message to civil society actors, highlighting growing suspicion toward associations and activists.
The case comes amid a tense political climate following President Kaïs Saied’s February 2023 speech, in which he criticized the arrival of irregular migrants and suggested a supposed conspiracy to alter Tunisia’s demographic composition. The speech sparked national and international controversy.
Observers argue that Mosbah’s conviction reflects a tightening stance against critical voices and solidarity initiatives, raising concerns over the protection of associative freedoms and migrant rights in the country.
