Kidnapping of opposition lawyer and politician in Bamako sparks concern over repression

A prominent Malian lawyer and political figure, Mountaga Tall, was reportedly abducted on Saturday evening in Bamako by masked men, according to family members and legal sources.

Tall, once an active member of the M5 protest movement that played a key role in the 2020 political transition, initially supported the military authorities who came to power that same year. However, he later distanced himself from the ruling junta and became one of its critics.

Family members stated that two masked individuals arrived at his residence and forcibly took him away. His wife allegedly attempted to film the incident but was pushed away and had her phone confiscated during the confrontation. A formal complaint for kidnapping has been filed.

The incident comes amid growing political tension in Mali, where the military government has intensified its crackdown on dissent. In recent months, several military personnel have been arrested on suspicion of attempting to destabilize state institutions. Investigations have also pointed to possible links between some detainees and political actors accused of supporting armed attacks.

Authorities have recently launched inquiries following coordinated attacks targeting military and strategic sites in Bamako and nearby areas. These events have further increased instability in the country and deepened suspicions between the ruling authorities and opposition figures.

Mountaga Tall has also been actively involved in defending military personnel detained by the junta, as well as challenging government decisions in court, including the dissolution of political parties.

The case has raised fresh concerns among observers about shrinking political space and the treatment of opposition voices in Mali’s transitional political environment.
