Russia offers to mediate in India-Pakistan tensions
In a significant diplomatic gesture, Russia has expressed its readiness to assist in resolving the ongoing conflict between New Delhi and Islamabad. This affirmation came from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a recent telephone conversation with his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar. The Russian Foreign Ministry conveyed this information via Telegram, as reported by TASS.
The discussion emphasized the escalating tensions following a tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of at least 26 individuals. Lavrov underscored Russia's commitment to facilitating a political resolution, contingent upon the mutual willingness of both nations to engage in dialogue.
The conversation, initiated by Pakistan, also covered various dimensions of Russian-Pakistani cooperation. The backdrop of the dialogue is marked by a week of unrest, during which New Delhi reported multiple exchanges of gunfire with the Pakistani military along the line of control. This series of incidents has heightened concerns about potential military confrontations.
In the wake of the attack, India has accused Pakistan's Interagency Intelligence Service of complicity, attributing the violence to the banned group Lashkar-e-Taiba. Pakistan, however, has categorically denied these allegations, asserting that it possesses intelligence regarding India's intentions to launch military operations. In a show of defiance, Islamabad has suspended all border trade, closed its airspace to Indian aircraft, and expelled Indian diplomats.
In retaliation, India has taken significant measures, including reducing the staff of its embassy in Pakistan and suspending agreements related to water allocation and visa issuance for Pakistani nationals. Additionally, New Delhi has declared certain military advisers from the Islamic Republic as persona non grata, further straining bilateral relations.
