Rising Ferry Prices Between Spain and Morocco Raise Concerns
As the summer season approaches, the cost of maritime crossings between Spain and Morocco has reached unprecedented levels, raising concerns among Moroccans residing abroad (MRE). The fares on the main routes across the Strait of Gibraltar, particularly between Algeciras and Tanger Med, have seen a significant increase that heavily impacts the budgets of families wishing to return to the Kingdom for vacations.
According to several testimonies gathered from travelers, a family traveling with their vehicle can now spend over 10,000 dirhams for a round trip. This increase comes at a time when expenses related to the summer stay are already particularly high for many MRE.
Transportation Costs on the Rise
The price hike is not limited to large families. A solo driver should now budget around 3,500 dirhams for a round trip, which is significantly higher than what was observed a few years ago. On top of this bill, the tickets for other passengers add up quickly, raising the total cost of the crossing.
This pricing evolution is part of a trend that has been ongoing for several months. Unlike previous years, prices have remained high even during traditionally less busy periods, leaving travelers with little opportunity to benefit from more favorable rates.
Lack of Competition Highlighted
According to several observers, this price inflation is linked to limited competition on certain strategic routes connecting the two shores of the Strait of Gibraltar. The presence of a small number of operators on these routes reduces the possibilities for price regulation, to the detriment of consumers.
This situation particularly affects large families traveling with multiple children and larger vehicles. For many, transportation costs now represent a significant portion of their overall vacation budget, leading some to shorten their stay or postpone their trip to Morocco.
Calls for Better Protection of Travelers
In light of this situation, several consumer associations in Spain are calling for strengthened controls over commercial practices in the maritime sector. They advocate for greater transparency in price setting and conditions that promote a more balanced competition among companies.
Among the MRE, expectations are also directed towards the authorities responsible for Operation Marhaba. Many voices are calling for dialogue with transporters to explore solutions that could alleviate crossing costs, particularly through specific offers aimed at large families.
Beyond the financial aspect, this issue carries significant social dimensions. For millions of Moroccans living abroad, the summer trip primarily represents a time for reunions with loved ones. When transport costs become a barrier, it directly impacts the maintenance of family and cultural ties.
