Morocco reports progress on official status of Amazigh Language implementation
The Moroccan government has highlighted significant progress in the implementation of Amazigh as an official language, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen linguistic diversity and public service accessibility.
Speaking during a communication meeting held in Salé, the Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, underlined that the executive has prioritized the rollout of projects aimed at integrating Amazigh into administrative and institutional frameworks across the country.
According to official figures presented during the meeting, the government has signed 73 partnership agreements with various public administrations and constitutional institutions to support the use of Amazigh in official settings. In addition, 25 action plans have been developed to guide the implementation process at different levels of public service.
Efforts have also included the deployment of 491 trained reception agents capable of assisting citizens in Amazigh, using its main variants: Tarifit, Tachelhit, and Tamazight. These agents are positioned in central and regional public offices to improve communication with service users.
The integration of Amazigh has also extended to visual and administrative identity elements. Nearly 4,000 signs and official plaques have been updated to include Tifinagh script, while around 592 government vehicles have also been labeled in Amazigh as part of broader visibility measures.
Authorities further reported the development of a specialized administrative glossary containing 7,949 terms in Amazigh, alongside the translation of official reports, informational documents, and institutional website content into the language. Studies have also been conducted to assess the level of Amazigh integration in public digital platforms.
In the education sector, a distance learning platform for Amazigh has been launched in partnership with the Ministry of National Education, aimed at expanding access to language instruction for students.
The Institute Royal de la Culture Amazighe (IRCAM), represented by its rector Ahmed Boukouss, also emphasized progress in incorporating Amazigh into justice, healthcare, media, and education systems. This includes the presence of Amazigh-speaking staff in courts to assist citizens and increased use of the language in public communication.
However, Boukouss also called for further improvements, particularly in expanding interpretation services in hospitals, police stations, and local administrations, as well as strengthening Amazigh teaching in secondary and preschool education. He also stressed the importance of developing artificial intelligence tools and digital systems capable of processing Tifinagh script.
The developments reflect Morocco’s broader strategy to institutionalize Amazigh as a functional official language across public life, while continuing to address operational and technological challenges linked to its full implementation.
