Morocco launches digital program to modernize handicrafts sector
Morocco has introduced a national program to accelerate the digital transformation of its handicrafts sector, aiming to improve competitiveness and expand market access for artisans.
The initiative was announced in Rabat by Lahcen Essaadi during GITEX Africa 2026 in Marrakech. It forms part of a broader roadmap to modernize the sector and integrate digital tools into daily business operations.
The program builds on a memorandum of understanding signed with Mastercard, Groupe Banque Centrale Populaire, and M2T. It introduces a structured framework combining training, financial support, and access to digital solutions tailored to artisans.
A central component of the initiative is the deployment of electronic payment systems, including smartphone based transactions. Officials say this will help artisans formalize their activities and access financial services adapted to their needs.
Essaadi said digitalization is a strategic lever for strengthening the sector in a context of rapid technological change. He added that improved access to digital payments can enhance financial inclusion and support long term growth.
Tarik Sadik, head of Maison de l’Artisan, said the program also focuses on helping artisans transition to new marketing channels. The goal is to enable producers to reach both domestic and international customers through digital platforms.
Omar El Mghari Idrissi said the success of the transition depends on developing tools adapted to the realities of artisans as well as market demand.
Hassan Charaf said the foundation will provide coaching and support to help artisans build sustainable business models, combining physical and digital approaches.
The handicrafts sector remains a key pillar of Morocco’s economy. It employs around 20 percent of the active workforce, with women accounting for 54 percent of artisans. Exports reached $130 million in 2025, up from $84.13 million a year earlier.
The United States is the largest destination for Moroccan handicrafts, accounting for 49 percent of exports, followed by France.
The government views digitalization as essential to scaling the sector’s international presence while preserving traditional production.
