Morocco highways expect heavy traffic during May holidays and school break
Morocco’s national highway operator has warned of significant traffic volumes across the country’s motorway network during the upcoming Labor Day holiday and the coinciding school break. The surge is expected to affect several peak travel windows as families and commuters take advantage of the long weekend to travel between cities.
Traffic is forecast to intensify on Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2, between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., when outbound travel is expected to reach its highest levels. Additional congestion is anticipated on Sunday, May 3, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., followed by another peak on Sunday, May 10, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., as travelers return from school holidays.
Authorities have urged drivers to prepare their trips in advance and monitor real-time traffic conditions through the dedicated mobile application. Officials also stressed the importance of staying alert to weather updates, particularly in cases of strong winds, rain, or fog, which could affect driving conditions and visibility on major routes.
Motorists are advised to take regular breaks every two hours to reduce fatigue and to check vehicle conditions, especially tire pressure, before departure. The use of emergency lanes remains strictly limited to critical situations, as improper use can disrupt traffic flow and delay emergency responses.
The operator also highlighted the availability of the electronic toll payment system at service area shops across the national network. The system allows users to purchase and recharge their passes more easily, aiming to reduce waiting times at toll stations and improve the overall travel experience during high-demand periods.
These measures form part of broader efforts to enhance road safety and ensure smoother traffic management during one of the busiest travel periods of the season.
