Study challenges the idea that all Roman roads led to Rome
A new study of the Roman Empire's vast road network is challenging one of history's most familiar sayings: "All roads lead to Rome." Researchers have found that Constantinople, present-day Istanbul, occupied a more central position within the empire's land-based travel network than Rome, particularly after the imperial capital moved eastward.
The research examined a road system covering roughly 300,000 kilometers across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. By reconstructing and analyzing the connections between major routes, researchers were able to assess which cities and regions occupied the most strategically connected positions within the network.
The findings suggest that Rome was certainly an important political and economic center, but its importance should not be confused with centrality within the entire road system. The capital had a particularly influential position in Mediterranean maritime activity, while several regional capitals served as major hubs for movement within their respective territories.
Roman engineers generally favored relatively direct routes when geographical conditions allowed it. The resulting infrastructure connected cities, military settlements, agricultural areas and commercial centers across a vast territory. Archaeological evidence also indicates that some modern roads and transport corridors continue to follow routes established during the Roman period.
According to archaeologist Tom Brughmans of Aarhus University in Denmark, the Roman road network played a major role in integrating distant parts of the empire. Roads were used not only by armies and merchants but also by farmers, local residents and travelers moving between settlements and markets. The network facilitated the movement of goods, animals and ideas, while also contributing to the spread of diseases.
The study found that some of the most strategically connected routes in the Italian peninsula did not necessarily pass through Rome. Several important corridors followed the Adriatic coast, demonstrating that the efficiency of the Roman transport system depended on geography and regional connections rather than simply directing traffic toward the imperial capital.
The network's center of gravity changed further in the fourth century AD, when Emperor Constantine established Constantinople as the new imperial capital. Located between Europe and Asia and close to the Bosporus, the city occupied a particularly advantageous position for connecting routes across different parts of the empire.
Constantinople's growing importance illustrates how political decisions could reshape the geography of transportation. Once the imperial administration shifted eastward, routes linking the Balkans, Anatolia and other territories increasingly strengthened the city's role as a major crossroads between continents.
The legacy of Roman roads also extended well beyond the political life of the empire. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD and the eventual fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, numerous historic routes continued to influence regional transportation patterns.
One example is the Via Augusta, a major Roman route that connected Cádiz in southern Hispania with the northeastern Iberian Peninsula and the approaches to the Pyrenees. Parts of the ancient corridor correspond to transport routes that remain important today, illustrating the long-term influence of Roman engineering on Europe's road geography.
The research offers a broader lesson about Roman infrastructure. Rather than functioning as a simple system designed to funnel travelers toward one city, the network was a complex web shaped by military priorities, trade, geography, administrative centers and changing political power.
The famous expression about Rome therefore captures only part of the story. The Roman road system was far more interconnected than the traditional saying suggests, and its history shows how the rise of Constantinople transformed the balance of movement across an empire that stretched across three continents.
