Loukkos basin dam reserves exceed 78% as water stocks strengthen across northern Morocco
Water reserves across the major dams within Morocco’s Loukkos hydraulic basin have climbed above the 78% mark, pointing to a strong level of stored water across several key facilities in the country’s north.
Figures published on the Ministry of Equipment and Water’s “Maa Dialna” platform show that total storage stood at more than 1.53 billion cubic metres as of September 14, corresponding to an overall filling rate of 78.3%.
Dar Khrofa reaches 90% capacity
The figures reveal significant differences between individual reservoirs, despite the generally high level recorded across the basin.
The Dar Khrofa dam recorded one of the strongest performances, with reserves reaching 428.9 million cubic metres, equivalent to a filling rate of 90%.
Meanwhile, the Oued El Makhazine dam in Larache province, the largest reservoir in the region, held approximately 488.3 million cubic metres, representing 70% of its capacity.
In the Tangier-Assilah prefecture, the 9 April dam contained 216.4 million cubic metres, with its filling rate standing at 70%. The Ibn Battouta dam was considerably lower, at 43%, corresponding to around 12.6 million cubic metres.
Tetouan reservoirs show strong levels
Several dams in Tetouan province also reported substantial reserves.
The Acharif Al Idrissi dam reached 87%, with stored water estimated at 116.8 million cubic metres. The Smir dam stood at 83%, holding approximately 37.5 million cubic metres, while the Nakhla dam reached 62%, with reserves of 2.6 million cubic metres.
Further south within the basin, the Moulay El Hassan Ben El Mahdi dam, located in Fahs-Anjra province, reached 83%, with 24.7 million cubic metres in storage.
The Tangier Mediterranean dam recorded an even higher rate of 88%, corresponding to 20.1 million cubic metres.
Lower reserves at some northern dams
Not all reservoirs are at comparable levels. The Chefchaouen dam held approximately 9.2 million cubic metres, giving it a filling rate of 79%.
Further east, the figures were more modest. The Abdelkrim El Khattabi dam, in Al Hoceima province, stood at 35%, with reserves of around 3.7 million cubic metres.
The Jomoua dam recorded the lowest filling rate among the reservoirs listed, at 20%, corresponding to approximately 1.1 million cubic metres.
The latest figures underline the importance of the Loukkos basin in Morocco’s northern water system, while also highlighting the uneven distribution of stored reserves between individual dams. The overall level of 78.3% reflects substantial water availability across the basin, even as several reservoirs remain significantly less filled than others.
