Morocco intensifies road safety measures amid urban surge in traffic accidents
Morocco’s Road Safety Vigilance Committee has introduced a series of measures aimed at reducing road accidents, with a particular focus on motorcycle speeds and vehicles with diplomatic license plates. The initiative comes in response to rising traffic fatalities in urban areas, despite overall national improvements in road safety.
New speed monitoring for motorcycles
To address safety concerns, authorities will implement enhanced monitoring of motorcycle speeds and ensure compliance with technical safety standards. Advanced speedometers will be deployed, and inter-agency coordination will be strengthened to enforce these measures effectively.
Additionally, the committee emphasized the importance of helmets meeting safety regulations. Motorcyclists will face stricter checks to ensure compliance.
Diplomatic and foreign license plates under scrutiny
Vehicles with diplomatic plates will now undergo road safety checks in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Fixed radar systems will also monitor traffic violations by foreign-registered cars, reinforcing accountability across all road users.
Regional and national road safety efforts
The committee plans to hold regional meetings to analyze local accident data and implement targeted interventions. Media campaigns will continue to raise public awareness about road safety, particularly during the busy summer travel season.
Contrasting trends in urban and non-urban areas
Recent data from the National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) show a 5.2% drop in road deaths nationally in July, with accidents outside cities decreasing by 9.5%. Non-urban fatalities fell by 24.8%, and motorcycle deaths dropped significantly by 32%.
However, urban centers experienced a sharp rise in accidents, with an 8.1% increase. Urban fatalities surged by 48.9%, highlighting the need for urgent action in cities.
A renewed push for safer roads
The measures reflect Morocco’s commitment to improving road safety through stricter enforcement, public awareness, and data-driven interventions. Authorities hope these efforts will mitigate the alarming rise in urban traffic accidents while sustaining progress in rural areas.
