Trump attacks Supreme Court after it blocks new mail voting restrictions

President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of the US Supreme Court after the justices declined to allow his administration to implement new restrictions on mail-in voting ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. The dispute has become part of a broader legal battle over the federal government’s role in regulating election procedures.

The Supreme Court’s September 14 decision left in place a lower-court ruling that prevented the US Postal Service from enforcing new requirements for federal election mail ballots. The administration had asked the justices to intervene after federal courts blocked the rules, arguing that the Postal Service had the authority to establish the new mailing requirements.

The rules were developed following an executive order signed by Trump in March. Among other measures, they would have required states and local election authorities to provide voter information to the Postal Service and comply with new envelope specifications, including identifying barcodes for mail ballots. The Postal Service could have refused to process ballots that did not meet the requirements.

The administration argued that the measures concerned the handling and delivery of election mail rather than the determination of voter eligibility or the conduct of elections themselves. Opponents, including several states and voting-rights organisations, argued that the Postal Service was exceeding its statutory authority and that the new requirements could interfere with election systems administered primarily at the state and local levels.

Trump responded to the Supreme Court ruling by publicly attacking the justices, including some members of the court whom he appointed. He accused the court of being influenced by political pressure and argued that the decision would harm Republican interests. Those claims were presented by Trump as his political assessment of the ruling rather than as findings contained in the court’s order.

The Supreme Court’s order did not settle every underlying legal question surrounding the Postal Service rules. The justices’ decision focused on whether the administration could implement the requirements while the litigation continued, at a time when election officials were already preparing for the November vote.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in an opinion supporting the outcome, indicated that timing and the potential disruption caused by introducing major changes shortly before an election were significant considerations. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented from the decision.

The legal dispute had already passed through several stages before reaching the Supreme Court. Federal District Judge Indira Talwani had blocked the Postal Service rule, and the administration subsequently sought emergency relief from higher courts. A federal appeals court also declined to lift the restrictions shortly before the Supreme Court considered the case.

Attorney General Todd Blanche said the administration would comply with the Supreme Court’s decision while maintaining that Trump had the right to express his disagreement with the ruling. The administration has continued to argue that stronger measures are necessary to protect what it describes as election integrity.

The controversy comes as states prepare for the 2026 congressional elections, which will determine the composition of the House of Representatives and Senate. Mail voting remains an important part of the US electoral system, although the rules governing eligibility, ballot requests and deadlines vary significantly from one state to another.

The dispute also illustrates the limits of changing election procedures close to an election date. Election administrators have argued that major modifications require time for ballot production, voter notification, staff training and adjustments to voting systems. Court filings in the case also raised concerns about the practical consequences of introducing new federal requirements only weeks before voting begins.

The Supreme Court’s decision leaves the existing state-based mail voting arrangements in place for the November election while the broader legal questions continue to be contested. The case is part of a wider series of legal disputes surrounding election administration, federal authority and voting procedures ahead of the 2026 midterms.

As the election approaches, the disagreement between the Trump administration, state authorities and the courts is likely to remain a significant issue in the US debate over election rules. For voters, however, the immediate effect of the Supreme Court’s decision is that the challenged Postal Service requirements cannot be enforced under the ruling for the upcoming midterm elections.
