Morocco Emerges as a Frontrunner in Africa's AI Readiness Race

In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, Africa is forging ahead, and Morocco has emerged as a prominent player on the continental stage. A recent report by the Policy Center for the New South, a Moroccan think tank, has shed light on the Kingdom's remarkable sixth-place ranking among African nations in terms of readiness to embrace AI technology.

Drawing upon data from Oxford Insights, the report delves into the Government AI Readiness Index 2023, a comprehensive evaluation tool that assesses nations' preparedness across three pivotal pillars: Government, Technology sector, Data and infrastructure, and Private sector. Spanning 39 indicators, the index serves as a barometer for gauging a country's commitment to fostering an ecosystem conducive to technological innovation.

Leading the charge on the African continent is the island nation of Mauritius, securing an impressive 61st position globally. Closely trailing Mauritius are Egypt at 62nd and South Africa at 77th, with Tunisia and Rwanda rounding out the top five African nations at 81st and 84th, respectively. Morocco, meanwhile, has solidified its place as a formidable contender, ranking 88th on the global stage.

According to the report, Mauritius, Egypt, and South Africa have taken proactive strides in nurturing AI-focused startups and enterprises, bolstered by progressive government policies that promote the growth of technological innovation. This strategic approach has propelled these nations to the forefront of AI readiness within the African context.

However, the report underscores the persistent disparities that exist across the continent, citing the relatively low rankings of certain countries, such as Côte d'Ivoire. These disparities underscore the pressing need for a holistic and strategic approach to preparing African nations for the inevitable integration of AI technologies.

While the potential benefits of AI adoption in Africa are manifold, ranging from economic integration to improved services for the continent's burgeoning population, the report highlights the structural inequalities and digital divide that impede widespread adoption. Limited access to education and the exorbitant costs of internet and broadband access pose formidable obstacles, with some African nations grappling with expenditures on these essential services reaching up to 44% of their GDP.

As Africa navigates the uncharted waters of AI integration, Morocco's commendable ranking serves as a beacon of progress, illuminating the nation's commitment to harnessing the transformative power of emerging technologies. With strategic vision and sustained efforts, the continent can overcome the challenges and unlock the vast potential that AI holds for driving socio-economic development and elevating the quality of life for its people.
